PROFILE

FideNa (Foundation for R&D in Nanotechnology) is a publicly owned research center created in 2007 with the goal of fostering the use of nanotechnology by the industry in Navarra (Spain). Navarra is a strong industrial region of Spain home to some major players in Renewable Energies, BioTech, Automotive and Food Processing.

One of the targets of the initial 5 years of FideNa is to develop the skills and know how that can be used for the transfer of nanotechnology to industry. In order to do this, we are located in the campus of one of the universities in Navarra (UPNA) and we have established our own R+D+i lines, some of them in collaboration. We have a team of 14 people (growing), some of them with several years of experience in nanotechnology and technology transfer.

ACTIVITY

-Nanofabrication: of nanostructures via interference lithography, in collaboration with MIT groups.
-NanoBio: self-assembly of bio-molecules (proteins, antibodies) on surfaces or nanoparticles. Includes protein purification, genetic manipulation… Drug delivery, sensing and catalysis.
-Nanocomposites: in particular cellulose reinforced with nanofibers or nanoclays for the food industry.
-Energy: increase of efficiency Photovoltaic Cells using surface nanostructures. Includes the ability to simulate the photonic crystal effect with our own methodology.
-Photonics simulation: of photonic crystals.
-Sol Gel: fabrication of coatings, membranes and adsorbents; synthesis of particles; xerogels, aerogels.

TOPIC RELEVANT INFORMATION

We have developed a process to simulate the way that radiation interacts with a surface (how much is reflected, how much is absorbed). We use it for improvement of the reflection of Photovoltaic systems, and it correlates very well with reality.
On this basis, this process can be further improved and developed as part of a more complex model for a complete photovoltaic system. The process is versatile and it can be adapted to other similar purposes.
