Development of new insulation materials


Abstract

Classical insulating material are showing typical values of thermal conductivity around 25-50 mW.m-1.K-1 and it is therefore necessary to use thick products to obtain performances required in the frame of national or European regulations. The aim of the project will be to develop VIPs and aerogels product with alternative core materials (low cost mineral based powders and organic foams with submicron pore structure).


Description of Projectidea

Classical insulating material are showing typical values of thermal conductivity around 25-50 mW.m-1.K-1 and it is therefore necessary to use thick products to obtain performances required in the frame of national or European regulations. The aim of the project will be to develop VIPs and aerogels product with alternative core materials (low cost mineral based powders and organic foams with submicron pore structure), that will have limited impact on living space and a improved mechanical behavior in order to allow use in new built and renovation. The developed product will be tested in real conditions and its performances regarding fire will be assessed function of ageing to propose a solution that meets requirements in terms of safety and life duration.


Consortium of partners, already involved

1) SME : Development of VIPs, Transfer to standardization bodies

2) Registered association :Modeling thermal and moisture behavior, Large scale testing facilities

3) University : Prediction & Improvement of long-term performances of VIPs, Hygrothermal measurements, Field demonstration in extreme cold climate

4) LNE (France) : Characterization of insulation materials (thermal conductivity, U value, mechanical behavior, VOCs emission) / Fire performances characterization (Cone Calorimeter, Tube Oven, …) and multi-scales modelling / Accelerated ageeing / Phys-Chem characterization (nano- to macro) / Large involvement in standardization bodies
